Apple Posts Highest Ever Quarterly Revenue

Apple has been the subject of much bad press this year, from its continued prosecution of gadget blog Gizmodo over a product leak to the recent firestorm over the iPhone 4′s antenna issues. Nevertheless, as Apple posted its highest every quarterly earnings last week it appears these issues have left consumers unconcerned as keen as ever for Apple products.

Smashing analysts’ forecasts, the tech company’s revenues rose 88% to .7 billion (£10.2bn) with a net quarterly profit up a standout 78%.

The spectacular results can be attributed to a strong demand for the iPad and the launch of the iPhone 4, the new and improved version of the company’s flagship mobile phone. And whilst Mac computers have been somewhat overshadowed by their counterparts, they have also experienced record sales.

In the past three months, Apple has sold 3.27 million iPads and 3.47 million Macs worldwide. Apple’s chief operating officer Tim Cook noted that half of those Macs sold went to new users. This and other figures suggest a virtuous circle of Apple uptake as customers impressed with the iPhone and iPad have moved onto a Mac.

Cook also noted that half of the American Fortune 100 companies are either using or testing the iPad. Jobs reiterated this, saying the “iPad is off to a terrific start”.

Sales of the iPhone fell slightly as customers waited for the iPhone 4 to launch in late June.  Additionally the company has deferred 5m in revenue to pay for the bumper cases it has promised to customers with faulty antenna reception on their iPhone 4. In spite of this, Apple claims that sales of the phone have not been hit. “My phone is ringing off the hook with people who want more supply” said Cook.

In the UK the phone went out of stock with all three of its providers, Vodafone, O2 and Orange. Available mostly on plan as a pay monthly mobile phone, there has also been a strong popular response to O2’s decision to cap data usage and much speculation as to whether Orange and Vodafone will follow suit.
