Apple Updates iTunes for iPad Compatibility
Apple Updates iTunes for iPad Compatibility
Not unexpectedly, iTunes was updated this week to accommodate the company’s much-heralded new iPad computing tablet. The new version, 9.1, not only adds support for the new device and its e-book app, but also adds some options for Genius mixes and fixes seven security issues. Released together with iTunes 9.1 was QuickTime 7.6.6.
According to Apple’s update page, a mere three features have been added:
* Sync with iPad to enjoy your favorite music, movies, TV shows, books and more on the go
* Organize and sync books you’ve downloaded from iBooks on iPad or added to your iTunes library
* Rename, rearrange, or remove Genius Mixes The 93-Mbyte download for Windows is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, while there’s just one 103-MB Mac OS X version. Both platforms support 18 languages.
In addition to support for the iPad, the new version offers a setting that enables automatic conversion to 128-Kbit/s AAC as songs are transferred to iPhones and iPods. Previously this option was only available for the iPod Shuffle.
The Genius Mix auto-playlist creation feature, while highly automated, offered next to no control on the users part before this update. Now you can also rearrange the generated playlist and hit next and previous buttons.
Security tightenings include protection against maliciously crafted images, MP4 files, and installation hacks.
Once the iPad becomes available, we’ll be able to see more of what’s new in iTunes 9.1, since features like the iBooks store are not yet activated.
Apple’s iPad is comfortable, like your favorite shoes or an old T-shirt. You can use it at a desk or table, or curl up with it on the couch. It’s a flexible device that fits into your life. It doesn’t really let you do anything you weren’t doing before, but you can do those things more easily and with less effort.
In my time using the iPad, I’ve found some tips and tricks for making the device even more versatile and easy to use, including accessories to buy, avoid, and re-use; tricks for writing on the iPad; and at least one really bad gotcha to avoid. Read on to find out, and don’t forget to share your own tips in the comments.
