Fathers, when they live up to expectations, are philosophers and guides when we are young, and hopefully, reliable and trusted friends as we age. It is from our father that we get a sense of ambition and goal in life. He often gives us guidance on how to accomplish those goals. Or, in the case of negative modeling, we sometimes learn what NOT to do. My father was often the one who would help cheer me on, or pick me up when life got tiresome and felt hard. His was a strong shoulder to lean on. I celebrate my Father and his love for me.

An Excuse to Celebrate Fathers

Father’s Day is a special excuse to acknowledge these things. The ancients of many civilizations used to worship the ancestors – which of course, include both fathers and mothers. Mother’s day in our culture was first acknowledged, but soon, the necessity of a Father’s day was seen as well. Since early 1970, the US officially recognized Father’s Day, but gradually most other countries acknowledged a special day to celebrate fatherhood as well.

How much significance does Father’s Day get in the modern society? Let’s not compare it to Mother’s Day here – because giving birth to and nurturing a child creates an amazing bond that can never be duplicated. Fathers take on responsibility for not only nurturing but for raising the child as well. While we no longer live in an exclusive patriarchal society, fathers still play a significant role in developing good mental health in children and in important decisions regarding moral development and education of children.

Significance of Father’s Influence

Boys often attempt to emulate the lifestyle of their fathers and girls do to a great extent as well- even if unconsciously. There are spiritual teachers who teach that our financial decisions and well-being come mostly from our relationship with our fathers and when there are difficulties in these areas, they can often be traced to difficulties in the father-child relationship.

Effects on Society

The lifestyle of a father not only affects his child. It ultimately effects society. Positive life decisions and proper education help shape society. So, when a child is given a good example of these, he or she in turn has a positive effect on his environment. Celebrating this relationship and this responsibility is very significant today. Look at all the sites on the Internet that sell Father’s Day gifts as one example. YouTube is replete with videos months in advance that exhort us to remember our fathers, especially on this day.
