Programs let you create DVD labels like a pro
Q: I would like to find a DVD label-making program for my Mac. I create family videos DVDs and would like to put photos and decorative labels on them to make them look more professional. Is there a program that you would recommend?
A: There are several. A good free program is DesignPro for Mac from avery.com (there’s also a Windows version). If that doesn’t do it for you, consider DiscLabel (.95 from smileonmymac.com) or Disc Cover (.95 from belightsoft.com). All the programs can create labels for DVDs or CDs, as well as covers and inserts for jewel cases.
If you get one of the aforementioned programs online and download it, you’ll also need adhesive disc labels (available at Best Buy, Staples and other stores). By the way, Staples sells a disc label kit for that comes with software and blank labels. Unfortunately for Mac users, it’s available only for Windows.( dell inspiron 600m battery )
Although you can attach a label to a CD or DVD with steady hands, it’s easier if you have something like the Avery CD/DVD Label Applicator. It’s a simple device that lets you center the label on the CD perfectly. And befitting its decidedly low-tech design, it costs around . It’s available at avery.com and other sites including Amazon.com.
Q: I recently saw an ad for the new Sony Dash. It looks like a slightly smaller version of the iPad. How do they compare? (dell inspiron 5100 laptop battery)
A: The iPad, which starts at 0, is a portable interactive device that bears many of the hallmarks of a laptop computer. The 0 Dash is just a “personal Internet viewer” (Sony’s description) that lets you view Web content, including news, weather, sports and traffic reports. You also can stream movies and TV programming from Netflix and get updates from Facebook and other social networks. But you can’t respond to those updates or send e-mail. Like the iPad, the Dash accesses the Internet via a wireless network. But it doesn’t have a battery, so you must plug it in. Portable it’s not.
On the plus side, the Dash, with its 7-inch display and its ability to stand up on a table or counter, can double as a digital picture frame for your photos. You also can use it as an alarm clock.
Q: When I had my Dell laptop, I bought a SimpleTech external hard drive and had my tech guy connect it. Recently the laptop pooped out, so I got a new Dell desktop PC. I still have the external drive, but the backup software that came with it is on the old computer. How can I get the software onto my new computer? It’s a shame to see the 250-gigabyte hard drive just sitting on my desk.
A: Where’s your tech guy when you need him? Seriously, though, this isn’t rocket science – or even computer science. Go online to simpletech.com, go to the Support section, click on Drivers & Software and download the latest version of the StorageSync backup software. Like all downloadable programs, it installs itself with a couple of mouse clicks. Once you have it installed, you should be back in the backup business.
Or, you could forego the SimpleTech software altogether, because Windows 7, the operating system that presumably is on your new computer, comes with a dandy built-in backup feature. It lets you decide which data you want to back up and set a schedule for automatic backups. And it should work well with your external hard drive.
Q: I use Kaspersky Anti-Virus. It downloads new updates several times a day, and my computer slows down drastically when that happens. I switched to Kaspersky after trying Norton and other programs, because it seemed to cause less interference, but either what it has to download has increased, or its program has become more intrusive. I could set the program to download once a day (while I am not using my computer), but would I greatly increase my risk of infection by not being up to date continuously?
A: Kaspersky automatically updates its virus protection software over the Internet as frequently as once an hour, but it claims that shouldn’t cause performance problems. According to the company’s Web site, “Kaspersky delivers especially small signature updates directly to you for highly-efficient computing and premium protection.”
I don’t know why your computer is slowing down, but to answer your question, no, you will not greatly increase your risk of incurring a virus if you limit the updates to daily rather than hourly. So go ahead and schedule the updating for once a day. Or just do it manually.
