The Samsung N130 netbook evaluated

Two new netbooks – the N130 and N140 – have been added to the “N” series by Samsung, a company that has been impressive in its build quality in the past  .  Both new netbooks have 10.1 inch screens and, unlike many new netbooks, are already available in the UK.

Choose your format

Recently all the rage, netbooks are now facing stiff competition from the latest tech craze – tablet computers, and in particular the iPad.  Even the most ardent Apple fans, however, must concede that trying to touch type on a virtual keyboard isn’t really possible, and the fact that there is no longer support for Flash makes the iPad somewhat limited in its appeal.
Anyone who remembers the first netbooks will know that they did suffer from a gimmicky reputation to start with, but netbooks have evolved and are now accepted as genuine alternatives to full sized laptops.  The quality N130 has a smooth feel, modern look and top specification.  Although the screen is small, Samsung’s Easy Resolution Manager and the N130’s 16:9 format allows you to see the whole picture without the black bands that sometimes appear top and bottom.

Evaluation

If you’re looking for great value performance and a full size laptop is out of the question you can rely on the Samsung Netbook N130; we bought this model due to strong reputation for quality and performance, and low price.  The build quality does seem a bit fragile in places; for example, the connecting joint between keyboard and screen seems a bit weak, but we’re hoping that it will prove robust enough for those of us who open their netbooks with a bit more gusto than others.  It has also been noticed that the underneath can get warm after prolonged use, so it is best used on a hard surface like a desk.

Battery

The Samsung N130 is a solid little diamond of a netbook.  The chassis is light and the battery life can stretch for up to 6 hoours.  Battery life in any portable computer will depend on the load it is put under, but in our tests, a fully charged N130 was left running with a video playing.  It didn’t last 6 hours, but it lasted a lot longer than many full size laptops, even with intermittent usage.

Summary

The N140 has stereo speakers, a slightly better screen and Bluetooth as standard.  However, the N130 is Samsung’s best value netbook and offers a good keyboard, an Intel Atom N270 processor, Microsoft Windows XP Home SP3 and features, in the case of our model, a matte white finish.

Verdict

The Samsung N130 is a great budget netbook with a decent specification – ideal for school or college work.  Affordability meets state-of-the-art technology. 4/5

Kendall Square doesn’t offer many cheap, tasty restaurants, so the trucks play a central role in its culinary ecosystem.

A review of the Dell Inspiron 1011

A claim made by Dell in their marketing statement for the Inspiron 1011 Mini Netbook states that the battery life for this new model is up to 9.5 hours. In practice we find this to be very misleading; depending on the use to which it is put this amount is roughly three times the actual life we have experienced with this netbook.

Netbooks and laptops share many features and characteristics as they are basically both portable computers.
