Up Close and Personal with The New iPhone 4

For the masses of people who own an iPhone 3G or 3GS who thought they had the best looking, best performing phone available, then think again.

Amidst a flurry of media activity, the iPhone 4 has arrived, not only boasting the usual feature improvements, but also sporting a great new look. The display on the iPhone 4 is what immediately stands out on the specification sheet, and looking at the phone it does not disappoint either. The staggering 960 x 640 resolution simply looks superb. Named the Retina display because it is capable of exceeding what the human eye can detect, the screen boasts 78% of the pixels found on the popular iPad, which features a screen of 10″ rather than the iPhone 4s 3.5″. Colour reproduction is great too with a typical contrast ratio of 800:1 and a brightness rating of 500cd/m2. This new display also has improved legibility in sunlight and good viewing angles. As you would expect, multi touch is still supported on the screen meaning the great pinch and zoom facility is still featured. A proximity sensor helps avoid accidentally pressing the touchscreen during a call and the customary accelerometer chip allows for auto rotate functions. In addition to this array of chips and sensors, a new one has been included on this model. Named the Gyroscope, it helps more accurately identify the exact positioning of the phone, allowing game developer to create more realistic gaming experiences more akin to a Nintendo Wii console than a mobile phone.

Apple have fitted their own A4 chip as the engine in the iPhone 4 and it is incredibly fast. All of the new multi tasking features would slow down many lesser phones, but that is not the case here. Apps load up at a great speed and flicking between homescreens is instant. The RAM memory has also been bolstered to 512MB. Such improvements benefit the phone in many ways that many people fail to realise. For example, not only does the camera application now load faster, but the actual speed of taking a picture has improved too, meaning you get the picture you intended to take and not one taken half a second after you’ve hit the shutter button. Battery life has been a bone of contention for previous iPhone owners. Thanks to the better power management on the A4 chip along with an improved battery, this has now greatly improved. Boasting 300 hours in standby or 7 hours of 3G talktime, typically the iPhone 4 offers about 25% improvement on it predecessor, the 3GS. What is impressive about this phone is how considered the changes have been. Its easy to revamp a handset and boast about a better camera, but more subtle changes such as processor speed, battery life etc make the iPhone 4 not only a phone with a wow factor, but also a very well thought out feature list which will benefit every potential customer.
